#OTD World War II: Battle of Berlin, begins.

The Soviet Army begins its Berlin campaign with spectacular display of artillery, 8,983 Soviet artillery pieces, up to 270 guns every kilometer, hurling a stockpile of seven million shells (1.2 million on the first day alone) at the German defenses on the Oder-Neisse River line and throughout Berlin and its surrounding areas. The bombardment signals the beginning of the offensive to take the German capital.

#OTD World War II: The Battle of the Seelow Heights, began.

Close to 1,000,000 Soviet soldiers of the 1st Belorussian Front (including 78,556 soldiers of the Communist Polish 1st Army), commanded by Marshal Georgi Zhukov, attacked the position known as the "Gates of Berlin". They were opposed by about 110,000 soldiers of the German 9th Army, commanded by General Theodor Busse, as part of the Army Group Vistula.

#OTD World War II: Belfast Blitz

At 0500 hours, the German air raid on Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom which began at 2300 hours on the previous date ended; the 203 tons of high explosive bombs, 80 parachute mines, and 800 incendiary bombs dropped killed 758, wounded 1,500, and destroyed 56,000 homes; 100,000 residents were made homeless. At the end of the day and into the next day, 681 German aircraft bombed London, England, United Kingdom.

Starting at 2300 hours, a heavy German air raid by 200 Luftwaffe bombers attacked Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. The attack would last until 0500 hours on the next day.

#OTD Nikolai Vatutin, Russian general, during World War II. Vatutin was responsible for many Red Army operations in Ukraine as commander of the Southwestern Front, the Voronezh Front during the Battle of Kursk and the 1st Ukrainian Front during the liberation of Kiev. He was ambushed and mortally wounded in February 1944 by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. (Born: 1901), died on this day in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, aged 42.

#OTD World War II: British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in Germany, which had about 40,000 prisoners at the time.

Pictured: A British military policeman and a Hungarian soldier on guard duty outside the camp. The Hungarian battalion had to remain in the camp under the terms of the truce and the troops were used for labouring duties.

April 13, 1945

#OTD World War II: Gardelegen massacre

German SS and Luftwaffe troops, while fleeing Allied advance with 1,016 political and military prisoners, deemed the prisoners too weak to continue marching. The prisoners were locked them inside a barn near Gardelegen, Saxony, Germany, which was then set afire. The crime was discovered two days later by Company F, 2nd Battalion, 405th Infantry Regiment, U.S. 102nd Infantry Division, when the U.S. Army occupied the area. Eleven prisoners were found alive seven Poles, three Russians and a Frenchman. The testimonies of survivors were collected and published by Melchior Wańkowicz in 1969, in the book From Stołpców to Cairo. Gardelegen became a part of the newly established German Democratic Republic in 1947 and is now in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

#OTD World War II: Battle of Narvik 

German destroyer Z2 Georg Thiele is forced to beach itself after taking damage from British vessels. Korvettenkapitän Max-Eckart Wolff, the ship's captain, ordered her run aground to allow her crew to abandon ship safely. Fourteen men were killed during the battle and another 28 wounded. The surviving crew of the ship took part in the land fighting at Narvik in the following weeks. Wolff served as a battalion commander in the Marine-Regiment Berger during the land battle. He was awarded the Iron Cross First Class on 12 May 1940 and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross the following August for his command of Thiele at Narvik. The ship later broke in two and capsized. Today, the wreck is one of the most popular diving sites in Narvik. It also appeared in documentary series Abandoned Engineering, season 2 episode 7 Germany's Lost Warship.

The Hungarian Declaration of Independence declared the independence of Hungary from the Habsburg monarchy during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. It was presented to the National Assembly in closed session on 13 April 1849 by Lajos Kossuth, and in open session the following day, despite political opposition from within the Hungarian Peace Party. The declaration was passed unanimously the following day 🇭🇺
