Outside Human Meaning

That thought about the "world without us" has been following me. The more I think about it, the more I notice how much of the world feels familiar only because we have made it human. A road through a forest is a simple example. There is something comforting about it. Not because the forest is safe. The road tells you that people have been here before. Someone chose a way through the trees. Someone painted the lines. Someone put up signs telling you where you are and where you are going. Even in the dark, you are still inside a human world. But imagine stopping the car. Turn off the engine. Turn off the headlights. The forest has not changed, but your place in it has. Without the road guiding your attention, the forest stops feeling like scenery. The trees are not there to look beautiful. The darkness is not there to scare you. The forest does not care where you are going. It does not know you are there. This is where Thacker's idea becomes more unsettling to me. We usually experience what he calls the "world for us." We give things names. We draw borders. We make maps. We turn mountains into places to climb and stars into constellations. We make the world readable by placing it inside human meaning. The "world without us" is harder to think about. Not because it means a world where humans have disappeared. It means reality considered outside the meanings we give it. The forest was there before the road, before its name, before anyone thought it was peaceful or frightening. And it may still be there when there is nobody left to call it a forest. But there is a strange problem here. Even when we try to imagine a world without us, we are still the ones imagining it. We can picture an empty forest, a dead planet, a universe with nobody watching. But there is still a human mind looking at the picture. Maybe that is one of the limits Thacker is pointing toward. We can think about something beyond the human world, but the moment we think about it, we bring it back inside human thought. We can try to imagine reality without us. I am not sure we can ever imagine it without ourselves.
