The Earthquakes in Turkey got me to thinking about the New Madrid Earthquakes, again.

Today in 1812, New Madrid was hit by the most severe of the New Madrid earthquakes - a 7.8 Magnitude, just like the one in Turkey that happened just a day or two ago. The timing is as bizarre and ironic as it is terrible. It was estimated through siesmic topography that there is a 25-45% chance of a magnitude 6 or greater quake (maybe even a series of quakes) here within the next 40 years. From what I gathered, this would be the worst place on earth to be for such a disaster due to the region's geography. The image is believed to be the infication of the sheer size of the earhquake in 1812. See how massive it is? The earth in the eastern U.S. is far older and therefore transmits vibrations extremely well compared to the west coast. If it happens, it will be the worst natural disaster in U.S. history and likely result in a huge loss of life and cripple the whole country.
