6Look into the cognitive functions and it makes sense. The Ni (Introverted Intuition) and Ti (Introverted Thinking) love noticing patterns (Ni) and constructing models with this patterns (Ti). Extraverted Feeling (Fe) is one of our primary ways of gathering data from the outside world. This all comes together to create a person that generally loves observing people, creating and testing hypotheses on how people behave. But because their dominant function is introverted, and their inferior function is Extraverted Sensing (Se - gathering external data through the five senses), the actual part of engaging with people is often daunting and/or draining, increasing with the amount of chaos (noise-signal) in the situation. This is offset when the Ni-Ti are going to town, i.e. when we feel like we’re gaining new insights. The Ni-Ti pairing is better through observation than in the chaos of doing; particularly when it comes to social engagement because of the Fe’s drive towards social harmony. The Fe may be inclined to prioritize said harmony over the pursuit of understanding one’s own needs (which would be informed by Fi and Si, Introverted Feeling and Introverted Sensing, our unconscious “Shadow” functions). This is unless you’re a Jumper like me (a different theory called OPS), in which case your Fe may be “jumped” over in favor of the Ti. (Which can make me more INTJ-like at times, I’m working on it 😭) There’s much more nuance than just this, but cognitive functions explain the “why” behind these things in a way that I find really actionable. Kind of like the Enneagram, you can view MBTI “personality” types as just a layer on top of a set of patterns of cognition. The cognition can express itself in different ways. Many INFJ’s tend to identify with Enneagram 2’s and 4’s. The Jumper like me more often lands in the 5 because of our comparatively low Fe. Learning some underlying theory has revealed so much, and I love it! (edited)
