A little bit of «esprit»
I saw a post here that got me curious. Some languages carry different meanings to mind and spirit. But... 🇫🇷 French has only one word for both: esprit. Meaning in 16th century: liveliness, wit, vivacity. To Old French (espirit): spirit, soul. To Latin (spiritus): breath, inspiration, breath of life. To latin, it also means "disposition, vigor, courage". And in 13c its meaning was vital principle, life. To French, it carries the expression "esprit fort", for strong-minded and freethinker people. On the other hand... 🇬🇧 English "added" the religious part to it in 14c, "divine mind" or "the soul, extension of divine power to man, charismatic power". It's very interesting how languages can even shape the ways of thinking.

On a related note, I've been wondering about sex and gender. In Dutch, we have only 1 word for that: geslacht, which means (biological) sex. Nowadays I feel the gender ideology is such a foreign concept to my native language, that people reuse the word "geslacht" for it. And that's where the confusion kicks in. People argue about the terms, but most of it just comes from a perceived pollution of word definition, where some think an old word is used incorrectly in a different context. While it infact is reused to express gender, lacking a more distinct term. 🤔

Went to German Fest a few months ago!
I went for two days in a row out of three! I was the only one I ran into that actually spoke good German though after my years learning it.. ugh. So much for German fest in America. I wanted more German speakers to connect with.
