I'll preface this with where I am in the lgb-tree (hehe): I am bisexual (not too much though), figuring out my newly realised femboy-ness one teeny step at a time, and am questioning *possibly* being paragender :) Ally to all LGBT friends 💜 As all us LGBT peeps should know by now, pronouns do not equal labels, but now I'm starting to realise that labels don't necessarily equal identities either. I've seen on many forums and conversation threads people say that they Identify as non-binary because they didn't want to take the time to go into finding a deeper label than that, which is fine, but it makes everything so much more confusing. Here's why: In the gender tree, there are 2 categories: cisgender and transgender. Of course, cisgender is you were born one sex and identify fully with the associated gender, yes? Now think about transgender. Most think of transgender as having been born one sex and identifying with the opposite binary gender, however it is just a BIG umbrella for every non-cisgender identity (including the binaries, of course). Under the transgender umbrella, still exists the binary genders male and female, but also the sub-category non-binary which has its own set of genders and subcategories. Now, imagine someone who identifies as non-binary does so out of not caring enough to go deeper into it (again, it's valid), but, of course, not knowing does not equal not *being*. Let's say that this person hypothetically looked deeper into it, and found that they are, say demigender. Demigender is not a binary gender identity so it would fall under the non-binary umbrella. So, if this person can validly identify as non-binary because that is the umbrella under which they fall, what would stop a, say paragender individual from validly indentifying as transgender as that is the umbrella under which they fall? TLDR, gender umbrellas are far more confusing than the f***ing identities themselves! While they are perfectly valid, pleeeease, for everyone's sanity, try to not use them if you feel that there could be more to it than that 😭 (edited)
