7Outrunning the night would mean moving fast enough to stay in daylight as the Earth rotates. The speed you’d need depends on your latitude: At the equator, the Earth's circumference is about 40,075 km, and it rotates once every 24 hours. Speed = 40 075 km 24 hours ≈ 1 670 km/h Closer to the poles, the required speed decreases because the circumference of the Earth is smaller at higher latitudes. At 45° latitude, you'd need about 1,180 km/h (733 mph). Near the Arctic Circle in summer, you could technically "outrun" the sunset by walking briskly since the sun barely dips below the horizon. In practical terms, a jet like the Concorde (max speed ~2,180 km/h) could actually "outrun" the night under certain conditions. Got em!
