Have you ever pretended to be a different gender online?

What happened? How did it go? Did you like or dislike the experience?

Yeah, when I was 12 and dumb. This was on an online game. Did it once and the kid ended up developing feelings. Never did it again after that. If I played a female character online, I'd tell people I'm a guy. But those who didn't know at first, usually developed feelings until I stopped playing as a female character. Interesting times.

Yes, I've had the experience that when I don't share my gender (like I don't have a picture and have a genderless name, for example when I spent a lot of time in Smash Brothers forums or on Reddit), people online always assume I'm a man. I guess my writing comes across as masculine. But the moment I actually reveal that I'm a woman, anyone I've befriended always start treating me differently. So now I always try to present as a woman immediately whenever I make a profile online so I don't have to deal with that.

Yeah, I found out that (these moments were on two different games); if I play a female character I created, men will not hesitate to revive me if I were knocked out compared to playing a male character. And on another game, I had some guys send me a private message to hit on me, thinking I'm a woman, or develop a crush because I'm being myself as I would with anyone. At rare times, I was given stuff for free and I wasn't looking for anything. I have a friend who wasn't sure what I was and was leaning towards female while her husband was thinking male. When I told her, she said it was because I'm 'nice.' Thinking about it now makes me chuckle and question how does a normal human trait I'd hope everyone has, to be more feminine lock. It's interesting to me yet funny because I don't do anything feminine. I guess it's the oxymoron of it that humors me. When interacting with others online, whatever profile picture I pick, everyone knows off the bat that I'm male.

It's cool to explore different ways of presenting and see how it changes people's reactions. Especially when it's people you'll never see or talk to again like on omegle, I think that's totally harmless.

Nope. Misrepresentation especially sexual orientation or gender to gain a favorable advantage is the most appalling thing one would ever engage in.

Some people just want to see what it's like. That's why I did it. I was curious how people would treat me if I presented as a man. It had nothing to do with sex or trying to gain an advantage. It was for a gardening account.

I understand Kelly. Sometimes we want to explore beyond our boundaries, shake things up a little bit, see what fruit falls from the tree. 😂😂😂🤣. Nothing wrong with that anyways as long as no one gets emotionally hurt.

Personally, I like how people treat me better when I present as a man online, or present without gender (in which case people always assume I'm a man). But I don't do it anymore because any friends I make get weird when they find out I'm a woman. I either have to lie about who I am or the relationship will change. So now I specifically make sure to overtly present as a woman in online profiles. Frankly, I don't like the treatment as much but at least I can feel like people I befriend won't change into someone totally different as they get to know me.

I did about .. sheesh.. close to 22 years ago when I was playing EverQuest. Lot less female gamers back then and HNGs were just.. giving away free stuff to females to gain favor with them I guess.. so I pretend to be female for all the free stuff and people lining up to be my friend. I just considered it a "game mechanic" at the time. 👀 It was nice for about 6 months and then I got tired of all of the attention and just wanted to be left alone to do things by myself. I deleted that character and started a new one. I learned a lot from those 6 months though and it's changed the way that I interact with people (especially women) online. Like, as a guy I pretty much get left alone most of the time. I don't know how you ladies put up with the constant stream of dudes bugging you and being creepy in your inbox. Mad respect. ✌️

Oh, sure. It went about as well as it could, I imagine. I liked that I could actually show my more stereotypically feminine sides without judgments of any sort. It also made me realize just how thirsty dudes online truly are lol.

Just to see what they were seeing. Shocked at how inappropriate the images were. I mean, the cow was on display in the worst way. Then I thought...maybe they were working and this is how they make their money. I mean why date anyone you meet on an app. Just hook up. It's FREeee!! And no attachments.
