I rather be a consumer than a business owner UNLESS I ran a business of something I’m super passionate about.

Yes, I've realized I can only work for myself about things I actually believe in. My business started because I saw a problem in the world I knew I could fix. I feel bad when I do certain things like marketing tricks and have to stop. For example we put pop-up forms on our website to ask people for email addresses, which collects tons of emails, but I felt bad about it because I know that pop-ups annoy people. I had to take them down. I only feel good if I feel like I really believe in what I'm doing.

What kind of business do you run?

I do odds and ends. I do online marketing for Amazon, which involves doing tutorials and reviews for products. Everything from yoyos to electric skateboards. I also teach gardening classes.

Oh that’s neat! You do have to give Amazon commission for that though, right?

Amazon has an affiliate program. So what I do is find great products that I believe in. Then I'll write about them and use my special affiliate link to link to the item. Like I'll review an electric skateboard and at the bottom of the page be like "Click here to get this on Amazon" (of course I always make sure to say that I am an affiliate and make commissions, but I also will never recommend something if I don't think it's worth it). If someone buys the item from my link, I get a 2% commission. It isn't a lot but I've made hundreds of tutorials and review pages since 2010 or so, and it starts to add up after a while until I can survive on it. But I have to make sure to constantly update old ones and make new ones so I'm sharing relevant and modern products.

Ah ok, I’ve seen and heard things about the Amazon affiliate program. Do you think it’s worth it, the time and fees and such?

In short, no. It used to give much higher commissions (6-8%) but they cut them when covid hit. It was a 70% paycut overnight on commissions on top of the pandemic. It was really scary and stressful. I started teaching live gardening courses on Zoom to survive during the pandemic, but it's a 6 week course and I can only handle about 20 students at a time, so that's only 20 seats every 2 months or so. Now that I've taught it so many times and know what students need, I'm in the process of recording the class as digital videos. I hope that will let me be able to sell more than 20 seats every 2 months, and will be much less exhausting since instead of teaching live classes the only thing I have to do is issue refunds and answer customer service questions.

Ahh ok. I guess investing more time into getting US figure skating coaching licenses and such would be more worth it, and more enjoyable, I’d imagine! Thank you for sharing your story though!

Yeah I don’t have the ambition needed to run a business, although I do want to possibly coach figure skating someday so that’d be a side business.

Isn't that the point? If you run a business about something you are passionate about, you run the risk of doing it too much to where you dint enjoy it. But if it's a bigger thing or has a bigger purpose and aren't doing it for the money or worry about how much time it takes, it would probably work. :) Lots of people have done it and anyone should try it. Learning experience or not, trying everything at least once in life is worth it.

Well, there are some people who are motivated by money or to keep a family business just for the sake of parents. So not everyone runs a business for that reason.
