I went to college for linguistics. Language is unique to humans. It’s our way of conveying the information gathered by our senses to other minds. Birds chirp to let each other know of their locations here and now. Dogs bark to do the same. But humans live in a world beyond the here and now. We not only collect information about the world, we figure out the patterns in it and try to replicate them ourselves. And in a rapidly changing world with billions of people, many people have grown up speaking languages that die off within their lifetimes. When researchers track down the last living speakers of these dying languages, they seek to learn as much as there is to learn - to figure out the patterns unique to this dying language. It must be a terrible feeling to know there isn’t anyone else in the whole world who understands your language. But, it must also be a relief to meet someone desperate to learn it. I lay awake tonight wondering if I might know what it feels like to be surrounded by people who just don’t understand what you’re saying. And I wonder what it would feel like to meet someone who truly wants to learn how I communicate.
