Meditation Isn't Just Stillness

Have you ever tried meditating while playing your favorite sport? Or being in a meditative state while working on your school work or at your job? If you have then awesome! Being in a meditative state simply means focused concentration and is both a subconscious and conscious thing we can do. To meditate, even in highly stressful, loud, or otherwise "impossible to concentrate" environments we can tap into a meditative state with these 5 tips: 1. Regardless of environment around you, tap into your breath (focus on your inhale and exhale until the world around you becomes just another sound like the ringing in your ear you've become used to) 2. Focus your concentration on a single spot on the train, your office, the car, your home, etc. In yoga, the sanskrit word "dristi" means intense gaze and focus where your eyes focus on one particular non-moving spot. 3. Drink some water and eat a handful fruit or vegetables. Typically when we are stressed out, food can be a quick remedy to the stress and allow your mind and body, especially your vagus nerve, to settle and relax. 4. Consciously focus your daydream into a controlled reality. If you find yourself wandering in your mind over the past, the future, or some fantastical place or event, stop and apply some focus by grounding yourself and feeling the earth beneath your feet, and from there tap back into the same energy while being grounded to the earth. Truly feel the earth beneath your feet, the air all around you, and the beat of your heart in your chest. That way you control your thoughts instead of letting them control you. 5. Movement is key to our wellbeing, so if you find yourself not being very active, dislike working out, etc, then at least go for a little walk, or take a few more laps then usual around the kitchen or house. By being physically active we can allow the body to release pent up energy, relax, and ultimately find a more meditative state then before. Breathe, dristi, hydrate/eat, focused reality, and movement.
