Did you know that it is actually incredibly expensive to be poor?

Here are some of the ways in which living pay-check to pay-check means you spend way more than does someone who makes enough to live comfortably. What are some other ways being poor is costly? __________________________________ Credit must be maintained to stay in good standing, but when your credit utilization is too high because you rely on credit cards to cover living expenses, your credit score tanks. This means that the savings that come from low interest rates on auto, home, and personal loans are not available to you, and you end up spending vastly more money when you borrow money than someone with good credit would. Owning a house or property is an investment that you get back through selling, renting out, or equity, and can even make a profit on. But when you cannot afford to own, all the money you would have invested in your future goes to landlords instead, and you spend vastly more paying rent than you would if that same money were put towards a mortgage. Money can be put to work for you, but only if you have money to spare. When you are poor, you cannot afford to invest in 401Ks, stocks, trades, bonds, crypto, or other money markets, whether for extra money or for retirement, meaning you miss out on all the dividends that small investments made over time would have paid out to you. You can barely afford your bills already, meaning you have no savings or cushion. When sudden misfortune strikes, you must go into debt to survive, meaning you spend vastly more money for tragedies because they inevitably entail paying interest you wouldn't have to pay if you could have afforded a healthy savings budget. You live paycheck to paycheck, meaning you cannot afford to buy more than you need or items you don't need during that pay period. This means the huge long-term cost savings that come from buying items in bulk (Costo, Sam's Club, etc) are not available to you, and you spend vastly more money on basic groceries because you buy a little at a time, full price, every single pay period. You are restricted to the lowest possible monthly premiums, meaning you must select the lowest levels of coverage. When accidents occur, your deductibles and out-of-pocket costs are far greater than they would be had you been able to afford higher monthly premiums and greater coverage. You never go to the doctor because you either have no health insurance, only have major medical, or your deductibles are sky high. This means you receive little to no preventative care, and illnesses and conditions that would normally be caught early and treated cheaply if you could afford regular checkups, go unnoticed and untreated until they've developed into serious and debilitating conditions that are very expensive to treat. You cannot afford to buy quality products, and so must buy cheap items that wear out faster and must be replaced faster. This means that in the long run you spend vastly more on things like clothing, electronics, automobiles, etc than you would if you could have afforded things that lasted longer. Sometimes a higher-paying job is only a city away. But when you cannot afford to relocate, you are forced to either make long and expensive commutes, or work at whatever jobs are within your geographical perview. This means you spend vastly more on gas than you would if you could afford to move closer to work, or are barred from applying to better opportunities entirely due to their location. Make no mistake: being poor is expensive. The world is set up so that the more money you have the more money you can save. Next time you wonder why poor people don't just adopt better spending habits, remember that maybe THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO. Thanks for reading.
