Images from the book Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Growing within the boundary layer between the air and a surface (which traps heat and moisture) is how mosses maximise their ability to stay hydrated without having the extensive root or vascular systems that trees have. Beyond the science facts, the author also highlights how mosses are an example of resourcefulness within limitation, among other reflections. I haven't even reached the halfway point of the book but it's already teaching me a lot. (I thought about how if I was a moss that judged myself based on tree standards, I would feel so hopeless at what I was and couldn't change, so much so that I would lose sight of the possibility of thriving as anything else. Which is actually a very apt contemplation for where I'm at in life lol)
