Rate the Film: 1998’s Mulan
Where would you rate Mulan? Feel free to express your thoughts and opinions in the comments. For me: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️maybe ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2. I remember seeing this in theaters and have good nostalgia for it today. Great animation, memorable and likable characters, good songs, particularly Reflection and Make a Man Out of You, and it balances its great dramatic moments with its comedic bits. Mulan is a inspirational and very likable character who, perhaps, risks so much more than any other Disney female lead. Technically she is considered a princess in the Disney Princess line up though she’s not really a princess nor does the film address that. If there are issues, one minor one is perhaps more action moments including hand to hand or sword fighting. This is something remedied in the 2020 remake. Major ones is Shan-Yu being a very forgettable villain. Finally as much I do like Mushu then and today voice by Eddie Murphy, he does feel out of place in regard to the voice. I think a lot of that is perhaps the time period and country that the film takes place in that you probably wouldn’t hear Eddie Murphy’s voice come out of dragon in China. Granted not every voice actor is Chinese or anything, but sometimes voice actors do well to disguise their voice enough to not being very distinct or at least not recognizable so that it makes the character unique. With Mushu, it kind of feels like your just listening to Eddie Murphy and you remember Mushu because he’s voiced by Eddie Murphy. I hope this makes sense, but I still like the character and his humor some of which we got memorable quotes from him such as “Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your cow!”is enjoyable. Highly recommend this animated classic if you’ve haven’t seen it.
