Stealing is a crime. I was overwhelmed by the richness of human civilizations and my Homo sapiens heritage; everything was there. From Inka and Maya to Sumer, Egypt, and Indian, Chinese, Greek, and Roman artifacts. But everything was stolen and never returned, even though most of those countries have the most extensive and advanced conservation of their cultural heritage. Pyramids and graves were pillaged, the Parthenon was stripped of all reliefs, and the extent of British savagery is astonishing. I was overwhelmed with wonder and rage at the same time. Hello Isidora. You make a good point, but please forgive me in having to disagree with you. If many of those things hadn't been 'stolen', as you called it, in many cases they would have been lost to time. A great example can be presented in that enormous statue of the Buddha which was destroyed in Afghanistan many years ago - wouldn't it have been much better in a museum than destroyed?

I'm from Brazil. My people LOVE soccer. People here are OBSESSED with it. I don't like soccer... I don't play it, I don't find it interesting...and this is why I don't bother going to soccer matches. The point here is. If you hate the concept of museums this much why bother visiting? Face the fact. Many cultures worldwide don't care AT ALL to preserve history. They didn't back in the 1800s and they don't now. Some just don't BOTHER preserving things and there are even examples of people in Africa and the middle east deliberately DESTROYING historical artifacts because their current religion wants to erase any trace of former ones. SOME civilizations learned the value of history...look at Egypt and their newly opened humongous museum, but they are the exception. If it wasn't for the brits taking all those artifacts it is CERTAIN that many of those would be lost to time. Now do I think that they have the RIGHT to retain said artifacts? No. I think cultures that were the original owners of said artifacts and have the WISH to preserve their own history should have said artifacts returned to them. But that is another discussion. History is important...and this applies to ALL history. Not everyone is interested in spending time, money and effort in preserving it and even worse...some even think that certain things need to be DESTROYED instead of preserved so yeah...sometimes a 3rd party need ro step in. Thanks to my coming to my ted talk.
