Do you read every museum label or only the ones that catch your eye?

It depends on the exhibit, I spent so long reading every piece of information at one exhibit that the security guards kept circling to make sure I wasn't up to no good!

1mo

Without a doubt, I read all the labels... they are an important complement to the piece on display 😉

1mo

When I go to museums, I am very curious and I don't like to miss any detail.

1mo

I read all of them because I’m curious about everything and that’s what I paid to do

1mo

How do I know if I'm not interested in it if I don't know as much as I can about it?

1mo

Only those that I don't know!)

1mo

The ones that would catch my eye. The problem is i’m too curious that everything catches my eye 😂

1mo

I miss no labels

1mo

Im reading them all, who knows what neat bits of information are in an otherwise unassuming display label/placard.

1mo

I read every label every time. Including the one's I've seen before.

1mo

Very few. I'm too impatient to spend hours reading all that.

1mo

Mostly just the ones that caught my attention (edited)

1mo

I tend to skim read every label/sign I can find, but I'll stop and read in depth if the subject interests me.

1mo

The majority

1mo

The labels are how you get the curator's story! It's a huge part of the museum experience.

1mo

Those that catch my attention

1mo

I try to read all of the ones I can. Ultimately, it depends on the exhibit and location of the museum

1mo

I always have to read everything, my curiosity gets the better of me jsjs c:

1mo

the truth is, sometimes I miss some :d due to too much stimulation, like in the mim

1mo

One day I was reading everything and the guide scolded me because I was taking too long XD

1mo

The ones that catch my eye.

1mo

Depends on where I'm at, or how long I've been there

1mo

I like to look very closely at the paintings, to see if there's something you can't find at first glance. And if I really like that painting, I check the label to see what it's about.

1mo

I'll read most of them. But haven't been to a museum in ages.

1mo

I'll scan the labels but focus on the things that catch my interest

1mo

I read everything

1mo

First, I observe the object itself trying to figure out what it is, and only then do I read the label even with the things that don't seem interesting to me.

1mo

All of them, I went to the Bovington tank museum and took 500 photos for my cousin who couldn't go 😅

1mo

Only ones I care about

1mo

It depends, but mostly the ones that catch my attention. I also go with the illustration, and if I like what I read, I get hooked.

It depends, if a specific work or exhibition catches my attention then yes, but as a rule, I don't read all the labels, I just focus on the most interesting parts.

1mo

Some captions don't add much. Usually only those that strike me, but it depends, sometimes I take the audio guide or if I particularly like it then I buy the book.

1mo

If I'm captivated by a piece of art for any specific reason, I'll read it. However if I'm at a more specific museum like the Alcatraz museum I went to recently, I'm reading every single lable and examining every single piece. (edited)

1mo

I read when what is displayed catches my attention haha

1mo

It depends on the museum and the exhibit. Sometimes I like to just look and enjoy and try and figure it out without reading the plaque.

1mo

Everything gets a quick initial skim ☺️

1mo

Nearly every one

1mo

Only the ones that catch my eye

1mo

Depending on the art movement the pieces belong to some labales can be completely useless while other are very important and helpful to read.

Summary

Museum-goers here split into two big camps: a large group reads every single label, saying curiosity wins and the text is part of what they paid for, while an almost equally large group sticks to the pieces that catch their eye. A sizeable middle ground says it depends on the museum or exhibit, with specialised collections earning a full read and art shows sometimes better enjoyed in silence. Smaller numbers skim everything and only dive deep when intrigued, read most labels, let their available time decide, or deliberately study the object first and check the label afterwards.
