Overplayed music. Why?

Throughout all of history music has been made. So many artists, so many genres. Why is it insisted upon, anytime I go out in public, that I must be assaulted by the same 80s music over and over again? Is it a placation psy-op to keep the masses as slaves? Is it just bad taste and power? I love finding music that I've never heard before. I love when styles mix. I cannot even fathom the amount of music still waiting to be discovered but I WISH it was more readily available.
