Personification of Nature

I find it fascinating that ancient humans took things they knew about the world and basically created personality traits for nature that ended up as Deities to explain the way the world worked. It's like a mind hack to remember a lot of random information we might not otherwise have been able to remember. Do you agree or disagree? Who is your favorite mythological character and why? (Any mythology!)

For me Thoth god of knowledge. Learning is the source of creativity and creation of living entities including bees and beavers for example…. Knowledge is absolute power.

I don't think they did it to remember things. Mostly to explain and give cause, as well as to feel like they had some semblance of control over it. That's why they would pray or offer gifts for good outcomes. And they could feel like there was a reason when things went bad. It was also a way to just explain things they didn't understand like weather. It's the same thing with modern religions, once we understood natural disasters and such it just shifted to other things we don't know about like the origins of the universe and life after death. A lot of ancient mythologies talked about those things as well. There's also some entertainment value from telling the stories. They also act as a way to bind people together through common beliefs and values, and consequently behaviors. I like ancient mythologies a lot, I'm planning to get more tattoos of other mythologies like Egyptian, Greek, German/Nordic, American folklore, Latin.

I agree, in Africa this is how lessons are taught. They call for wisdom and understanding plus its a great way to teach the young ones and preserve it over generations. Plus storytelling and dramatic plays bring people together. (edited)
