Aesop's Fables are some of my favorites, both as a child and an adult. The Boy Who Cried Wolf, the Tortoise and the Hare, and the Grasshopper and the Ant come to mind. They taught me life lessons that I hope to continue to live by. The stories I am most afraid of are Abrahamic tales, specifically the tale of Job. I'm somewhere between belief and disbelief. These tales were definitely inspired by events or ideas, and they continue to speak to modern humans. But I cannot say for sure. Side note, as a Creative Writing & English major, I'm thinking of focusing on Folklore bc of my love of storytelling. (edited)

My favorite has always been Slenderman. I know it's an Internet creation, but the amount of lore that exists, combined with the series Marble Hornets, has always fascinated me.

The UK has a lot of legends and folklore stuff but even here the vast majority of people aren't really aware of anything more obscure than the Lock Ness Monster. Personally I like stories that probably have an air of reality in them, like Spring Heeled Jack who was probably a Victorian criminal that happened to have a knack for acrobatic escape.
