Most people when they imagine someone "depressed" will Invision something akin to a profound sadness, tears falling from each cheek or something similar and along those lines. Depression could not be farther from the stereotype. For some it is an overwhelming numbness, both physically and also spiritually. Without knowing how exactly someone could have done it, we can feel the gravity of the earth has been increased dramatically, our movements are heavy, as though we're walking through water, our mind and awareness somehow have gained an extra amount of weight we must carry. What does Depression actually look like though? What signs could we recognize in others so we can make the effort to reach out to them and possibly alleviate in one way or another a bit of the suffering they find themselves floating in before they drown? The association of depression with dark rooms, Kleenex tissues and sad songs needs to fade away for more practical indicators for today's age. Seek out the one who always try make the others laugh, look around for the mask with the brightest smile. Pin point the one who puts the energy they have into making others feel comfortable. Detect the person whom consistently appears to be fine. Investigate the brightest stars around you, the ones who shine their light brightly towards others too obscure the darkness that hides behind it. Depression is having the awareness to notice your emotional state without the luxury of being authorized to feel them. Depression is having the best seat in the house to a show your only able to watch, unable to influence its narrative and this show is your life. Cynicism and depression are not mutually exclusive with one another, depression can also make a home in someone quite optimistic. The most positive amongst us could sometimes be the ones who's mask appears real, what better camouflage to conceal yourself is better than positivity?
