Paleoart #25 Dire Wolves
Dire Wolves have often been a staple in fantasy and television, but the reality is a lot more bizarre, and nuanced. Real Dire wolves were hardly wolves at all, and had actually convergently evolved from a seperate lineage of canines that split from wolves some 5 Million years ago. According to a recent DNA study published in 2021, Dire Wolves were dogs, and not close relatives of wolves at all. To accompany this new study, and present its findings in spectacularly visual manner, Cenozoic Paleoartist Mauricio Anton worked closely with the researchers to reconstruct the new Dire Wolf. In a prime example of the importance of visual art in the science of paleontology. This piece depicts the larger, brutish Dire Wolves defending their kill from a pair of modern North American Wolves. In defiance to their once-believed kinship, the Dire wolves are bigger, stronger, and more threatening.

Paleoart #132 Stegouros
To be the first to describe a new species in art form is a unique honor among Paleoartists such as Luis Perez Lopez. 2021 was a great year for fossils, not the least of which was the discovery of Stegouros, this tiny armored dinosaur from Chile had a machete for a tail, resembling an Aztec... read more

Paleoart #130 Knuppe's Ostromia
Joschua Knuppe is perhaps one of the foremost artists in the modern Paleoart Movement. Conjuring not only a wide variety of extinct animals to life, but often in new, unrepresented behaviors we often don't attribute to extinct live. Living animals are prone to strange, even adorable acts of... (edited) read more

Paleoart #133 Amphibious Monsters
Amphibians and Reptiles have long been at war for survival, but as Olorotitan from Deviantart depicts, while Reptiles conquered the world, not every battle was won. This massive Parotosuchus has successfully ambushed a Garjainia, leaving the Archosaur helpless as it pulls it underwater with dozens... (edited) read more
