Paleoart #54 Suminia
Suminia is one of the most bizarre animals from the Late Permian, because of its very unique lifestyle. This small Synapsid which existed before true mammals, was entirely arboreal, and posseses unique qualities commonly found in modern primates and arboreal rodents. Suminia had hands, primitive, but similar to rats and squirrels, with an opposable digit which it used to grip onto branches. The Permian was a unique era for terrestrial life, the true origins of what would become mammals, reptiles, dinosaurs and birds began here. This small specimen, drawn by Nix Draws Stuff, presents the animal in a very mammilian manner, choosing wisely to shield its protruding teeth with lips. Mammals would go on to dominate the arboreal lifestyle, both throughout the Mesozoic, and past its aftermath, eventually leading to our own creation.
