Absolutely. There are people for whom drug dependence really doesn’t change anything for them. Part of the criteria for “addiction” is that it is negatively impacting your life in some way. I knew this one guy who could not be around cocaine. If there was cocaine, he was going to overindulge until he didn’t have any left, then he would go break into peoples cars to get money to buy more cocaine. He definitely needed to be sober so he wasn’t getting arrested or possibly killed if he robbed the wrong person. There was another person, an elderly veteran who received a pension and social security. He was retired and had arthritis in his knees, so he had a harder time getting around. He no longer had a drivers license because his eyesight was starting to go. He liked to get drunk and watch old movies. He wasn’t drunk driving, robbing anyone, or really bothering anyone. He didn’t have to worry about it threatening his job because he was retired. So like… does he NEED to be clean??
