Frustrating reading philosophy and seeing the attitudes about women
It's tough as I'm reading philosophical texts (Plato's Republic, Tao Te Ching, Bible, etc.) by supposedly the wisest thinkers, yet they say things that show disdain (or worse) towards women. I understand it was a different time. But it's harder to respect someone's thinking when they keep reminding me they view women as lowly. Anyone else relate? (edited)

Its really hard to watch, learn, participate in a lot of things when you see them with open eyes and understand the underlying context. I never watched it but my 13yo started watching Modern Family. This is a very mysoginistic show and it won so many awards. I am cringing all the time in some of these things in the both the background and foreground of my life

One of the great disappointments of looking at people in history is seeing how most of them were awful people.

Yessssssssss. I recommend How To Be Perfect by Michael Schur, creator of The Good Place. He talks about the basic philosophies of Plato, Kant, etc., but selects genders randomly. He says he specifically does it because the greats were so annoyingly male-centric. It's really nice!

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” – Socrates
For those intrigued by Socrates’ call for self-examination, consider exploring Plato’s dialogues, especially “Apology” and “Phaedo,” to gain a richer understanding of Socratic philosophy.
