Continental rationalism to German idealism - speedrun

Basically, Descartes started by securing the thinking subject (the cogito and the certainty of the thinking “I”). Hume immediately destabilized it, arguing that the fixed "I" is just a bundle of everchanging perceptions (radical empiricism and the bundle theory of the self). Then Kant ("awoken from his dogmatic slumber by Hume") stepped in to save the possibility of knowledge, arguing that we never encounter reality "as it is in itself," but only reality as it is structured through the conditions of possible experience (transcendental idealism/distinction between phenomena and noumena). Fichte then made the "I"even more central (the self-positing "I" as the foundation of experience). Schelling tried to reconcile subject and object through nature and spirit (the philosophy of nature and the idea of their underlying unity) - and finally, Hegel took the whole mess and turned it into an everexpanding dialectic (process in which contradictions clash and are overcome, giving rise to a new and higher form) development of consciousness, history, and spirit (the development of Absolute Spirit through dialectics)... 🙄
