Is someone who gets angry being "emotional"?

Someone told me today that in response to conflict, men tend to get angry while women tend to get emotional. But isn't anger an emotion? What do you think?

Is someone who gets angry being "emotional"?

Oof. I once dated a guy who told me I let my "emotions" cloud logic. And then preceded to use his man skills to tell me what the logical solution was since I wasn't able to see it. That relationship didn't last long. Women have been equated as being emotional for eons. It's a stereotype. It's why we were considered the reasonable choice to stay at home, be a doting wife and raise children. Because the workplace, the voting ballots, political office etc were no place for emotions, so we weren't invited in. On the flip side, that same stereotype told men it wasn't acceptable to show emotion so they bottled everything up. When young boys begin to cry, they're told to "be a man", or "don't be such a girl." When someone feels powerless, unable to express themselves and not in control of their own emotions, usually the emotion that pushes through is anger. My therapist once told me that anger is the masking emotion and that there is always another emotion behind it. But when we can't identify the emotion or express it, we're at odds with ourselves and that creates anger. (edited)

Thanks to the patriarchy, anger isn't considered an emotion when men express it, isn't that great? :D

Anger is most definitely an emotion. Like all emotion, if it determines your words an actions, it will probably not result in the best outcome.

In our culture, "anger" is considered as our own enemy. Anger doesn't do something correct in a "long run". Anger might be an emotion but it's never been said by anyone that all emotions have to be "good". So to me, the question is tricky; although I will agree with you.
