Forget Left Wing or Right Wing... Are you Up Wing or Down Wing?

Up Wing = We must work together to build a better future together. It will take sacrifice. No pain, no gain. Down Wing = We must preserve what we have even if it harms future growth. Society is zero-sum and pushing economic growth hurts people. Which would you consider yourself?

Liberals or conservatives can be either. It's about how you view the optimal way for a society to move forward for the betterment and prosperity of all.

Up Wing. Hands down. (See what I did there?) I'm not a big fan of what we have. I guess I'm always looking at the flaws in a system and have trouble appreciating the benefits. So I'm always striving to make it better. I also believe life doesn't need to be zero sum. I've found in my life that when people stop trying to win all of the time, you can actually come out better. It's invariably harder. But better. And I don't value something that requires no sacrifice. I think about the quote from _A League of Their Own_ (which I'll probably butcher): "Baseball is great." "But it's hard." "Ah, but the hard is what makes it great." And like baseball, I believe life should be a team sport. I don't have everything I need in myself ... I need other people to move forward. If we're all fighting each other thinking it's a zero sum game, we stagnate. No one really wins. But if we all work together, we can do amazing things!

Both, we need to work together to improve society, not necessarily advance it.

Interesting answer! What's an example of improving society that's not necessarily advancing it?

@Kelly Infrastructure. Better schools, better roads, better Heathcare and equal adequate education for everyone. By focusing on improving the day to day living conditions this would only help advance society. But advancements wouldn’t be first, at the cost of the people and their happiness and livelihood.

@Alex I agree with all of this as well! We would need to fix the current issues that we have before advancing and moving forward!

I don't think things are quite black and white like that. For example, climate change issue. The problem for the most part isn't that people denying about it being a thing, but rather how drastic of a measure and how much sacrifice (on the citizens) is appropriate for these changes. There are also a lot more other naunces (battery production causes a lot of production and uses precious metal, renewables aren't as reliable, energy security, cost of renewable energy and vehicles for the average citizen, etc).

Those are great points. Life is rarely black and white. It's all shades of gray.

No Wing. I don't allow myself to be swept up in agendas, partisanship, and groupthink. My beliefs can fall into any group depending on specifics of what we're discussing, many being an amalgamation of both "sides" or original ideas. I can think of situations in which I will be "up wing" and others I'll be "down wing" as well. Some I'll be somewhere in between or fall outside. I am both, I am neither.

I like it. What's an example of a principle you believe in which might be considered one way or the other?

We gotta go up. Our schools and society teach 0 emotional understanding. Those who have learned to understand emotions only came to learn that from having a bad time of things in most cases.

how would you "build a better future"?

Invest in renewable technology and use America's legendary R&D ability to further develop the kind of industrial batteries you need to ship/store huge amounts of energy in more useful ways. That would not only give us an advantage here because we wouldn't be dependent on energy from other countries, but it would also give us a new future-based industry, create factory jobs, and give us valuable domestic products to start exporting again.

@Kelly the Majority of Lithium comes from South America, and the Graphite comes from China, Cobalt is Mined in Africa

@Kelly not at the destructiin if other countrys, like the cobalt mines in africa leading to birth defects and health issues for them while were having a false sense of morality here

@Zzer0 It sounds like you're saying that since some places have issues with cobalt that humanity shouldn't use it? The solution is to fix the problems not give up all cobalt-based technology. I'm curious at your answer to the same question. How would you "build a better future"? Or would you just get rid of it all?

@Kelly im saying americans shouldnt have other countrys Mining Cobalt at the cost of thier health just to make americans feel there doing thier part in "Going Green" when using Nuclear "Fision" not Fusion would be a better and More Clean energy for the Future

@Zzer0 If there's no ethical way to mine cobalt, the solution is to invest in other forms of battery technology that don't use cobalt. Not give up on developing batteries.

@Kelly you mean like Lithium, wich also impacts the enviornment, we cannot move away completly from fossil fuels as all plastics are made with them, to think so is ignorant, everything we use in daily life comes from fossil fuels

@Zzer0 You imply drilling for fossil fuels never causes problems. We couldn't give up fossil fuels overnight, but humans can find replacements long term if we are willing to invest into the technology. Are you against developing new technology to replace an energy source that makes us dependent on unreliable countries?

@Zzer0 I definitely agree we need to invest in nuclear power. That's one of the most promising renewable energy technologies longterm. I've actually invested in uranium.
