Today is the birthday anniversary of Kim Il Sung, the central figure in modern Korean history and the founding leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Known to many as the Eternal President, Kim Il Sung's life was defined by struggle, leadership, and a deeply rooted commitment to Korean independence and self-determination. Born in 1912, during a time when Korea was under brutal Japanese colonial rule, Kim Il Sung entered the revolutionary movement as a teenager. He quickly became a prominent leader in the anti-Japanese guerrilla resistance, organizing and commanding armed units dedicated to the liberation of Korea. His leadership in battles such as the Battle of Pochonbo in 1937 inspired many and remains a celebrated part of the revolution. Following Korea’s liberation in 1945, Kim Il Sung led efforts to establish a new state in the northern part of the peninsula. In 1948, he founded the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, becoming its first premier and later president. He introduced and developed the Juche idea — the principle of self-reliance — which became the cornerstone of the nation’s political and social systems. Under his leadership, Korea prioritized industrialization, education, healthcare, and infrastructure, seeking to build a strong, independent state free from foreign domination. Kim Il Sung’s role extended beyond the Korean Peninsula. He was active in the global non-aligned movement, met with numerous world leaders, and was recognized as a voice for smaller nations seeking autonomy during the Cold War era. Korean people commemorate the Day of the Sun — a national holiday in Korea — a time to reflect on the historical significance of Kim Il Sung’s life.
