I talk too much and I laugh too loud. How can I shut up?
I am frequently told, often by my family, that I’m talking too much, too loud, or I’m laughing too loud/annoyingly. I’m sick of hearing this, it’s super hurtful even though I know they’re right. I don’t know how to stop, I almost question if I even can. But the last thing I want is to be seen as obnoxious and annoying when it’s far from my goal. Please, someone help before I duct tape and/or super glue my mouth shut 😭

Something I do is I try to consciously match the volume of the person I'm speaking to. If you've ever learned to project your voice or sing by feel you know you can direct your focus to your throat instead of your head while speaking. You'll learn to manually feel your volume. But also, your laugh, and the fact you speak isn't something people should just be calling annoying. If they don't have anything useful to say about how to fix it they might just be mean and in that case, focuse instead on speaking to people who like you and enjoy your company. Also genuinely you may want to get your hearing checked just to be sure there isn't a physical cause. If there isn't. Videos on voice training will teach you how to hold and control your voice in ways that might help you feel more confident in a kind environment. Sorry for the long message but wanted to cover all the bases since we don't know eachother. I hope some of it helps and you get to find a space to enjoy your voice.

Each person talks in their own volume, laughs in their own volume ECT. It would depend on if it is just certain people saying this, have you asked others? I never suggest changing for others , but if it is you who wants the change. Here are my suggestions. You could also try a decibel app or device to help you realize how loud you are, and try cognitive behavior therapy to notice and make active changes. It will take time of making active changes. But eventually it will become subconscious and change. Just my suggestion though.

As a fellow loud chatterbox, I would say try and read the room, pick up on signals of when its time to listen or move on. But also family is different, you see/interact with them all the time so their patience for it is less, just like im sure there are some things they do that you find slightly irritating. I would only worry about it if friends/colleagues also mentioned it.
