1 He realized he liked to many of your pictures and now is looking desperate. 2 He is subconsciously making you think he no longer likes you and in return you are now giving him the attention he is wanting. 3 Cause he is acting like a child and trying to be hurtful cause he knows most women have low self esteem and they get their self worth from online likes.

Given the benefit of the doubt, then we can safely assume it's not to play mind games. Best answer from me would be to give themselves closure and to end a chapter in their book by acknowledging the past and facing their current reality: they want to move on and so, they act on it. (edited)
