How do people gaslight?

Do they truly believe that they're right and they did nothing wrong or do they actually know that they did? I am so confused about a group of people, they hid when I questioned them about it, tried to get accountability. If they actually believed what they said, would they be hiding like this?

I have never had someone attempt this, but if they tried they could eff right off.  Been through abuse and manipulation, but never even heard of this until a few years ago.

Many reasons. Protective parts won't let them admit fault. Or are scared of rejection so they lie to keep people close.... So many many more reasons.
