No, because everyone experiences differently due to biology/nervous system, their biography/what they've experienced, and their personality - even two people with exactly the same diagnosis can perceive and experience differently. To a certain extent, we can be empathetic and put ourselves in the other person's shoes and empathize, but we never know 100% what is going on in the other person. We can show genuine compassion and understanding and offer help. If we have experienced something similar, we may show a different understanding and feel closer, but everyone also deals with setbacks differently. (edited)

Yes, but deep down, everyone deals with pain in their own way.
1mo
Sure, it's called empathy 🫰🏻
1mo
Definitely depends on the situation and if both people has experienced the pain, also the definition of pain for each person.
1mo
No, pain is a private experience. People can understand the facts, recognize the symptoms, and imagine what it might feel like, but imagination is not experience. Every person's suffering is shaped by a history no one else has lived. The closest we can get is an approximation. Understanding someone's pain completely is impossible. Respecting that you never fully will is probably the closest thing to genuine empathy.

If you have empathy and humanity, then yes, it's possible. (edited)
1mo
It is absolutely possible, but everything he has been through and his perception of that fact must be considered.
1mo
It depends on the level of empathy....
1mo
You can never truly understand someone else's pain. You might have experienced same, but never the pain.
1mo
No. You can only be empathetic.
1mo
If you have empathy, it awakens the view that everyone perceives pain differently, I don't think it can really be understood.
1mo
Yes. There are people who have that ability. Others do not.

Definitely, yes.... Although not everyone can

Unless you are that person, no. You can get close to this if you are from the same context and socioeconomic stratum, you are family and have gone through similar milestones/events, closeness, etc. However, each of our lives clouds our perception of others' emotions, and we have a very defined personal bias caused by our context, culture, education, biology, development, and how stressed our nervous system is or how normalized that situation has become for us. I mean, isn't it unpleasant to see the news where they report how they have bombed Palestine again while we eat? Doesn't it make your stomach turn? Because it does for me, and yet hundreds of people, out of habituation, no longer care. And like that... you can imagine hundreds of examples.

If you've been through something similar, you probably

Not unless you have been in their position. You can try and sympathise with them, but to truly understand their pain, you would have to live it and experience it
1mo
Yes ......
1mo
No. Each person is a world that experiences life differently, so the pain of others can only be understood partially.
1mo
Yes, but not in every instance or with everyone.
1mo
Yes u can empathize but everyone does not experience pain the same way and some people's version of reality is very warped by past experiences
1mo
I believe that only really works if you've experienced a similar pain before. Should we expect someone who never commits to understand the loss of another? But maybe I'm being too radical about it.

Yes

Very difficult!
