Is humility something you practice, or something that happens to you?

Humility is practiced through conscious choices, but it also happens when life reminds you of your limits. True humility is both discipline and revelation.

1mo

Absolutely something you practice 🤍

1mo

It stems from how we were raised. Sometimes, it might be seen as a weakness, but it's a double-edged sword—if you have none of it, you can come across as arrogant, but if you have too little, it makes it easy for others to take advantage of you. So, be clear about your feelings, and be smart enough to express them appropriately (edited)

You practice humility by choosing to listen, learn, and admit when you’re wrong. Eventually, it stops feeling like a practice and becomes part of who you are.

🤨

The truth is that the term humility is a spectrum; for some people, it is a conscious process, while for others, that term lives with them. The important thing is to know how to recognize how you apply it in order to manage it better.

Humility is something you practice. Humiliation is what happens when you don’t. There’s a subtle difference. 😌 I try for both. I practice humility voluntarily, mostly so life doesn’t have to humble me with a 2x4. 😂

That practice. Intellectual maturity and self-discipline allow you to assess the world and your own limits through pure logic, without needing life's blows to understand how things stand. The expectation that life will "humble" you through failures is, essentially, the approach of those who operate solely on a reactive basis, not reflective.

Something that happens

Humility is a virtue that you learn. I can be confident in myself and my abilities but not have the arrogance of feeling superior to other people or the unnaturalness of feeling inferior to others. There is no measure of comparison since we are all different people. At most, someone else's success can spur me on and motivate me to do better, for what my goal is. And surely, one cannot help but rejoice in another person's success; envy is a useless feeling.

1mo

Both, it’s a carrot or stick thing

1mo

I think that like everything (if not most things), it's not something that is 100% one way or the other; sometimes it will be more conscious at other times, but the point is to try to be the best version of yourself.

1mo

Humility is something you practice… until life reminds you why you needed it in the first place. 😂

1mo

What happened to me after applying

1mo

Something that one decides to do, I suppose.

1mo

No

1mo

It's something that is practiced, because you can't be humble unless there is some reason for you to feel exalted, and staying humble and centered is the practice we know as humility.

Overcomes

It depends.

Something I practice

👀

1mo

Humility is something everyone should practice because it is a sign of person's maturity and confidence.

1mo

Both honestly, being humble and sometimes life keeps you straight on track if you feel too comfortable lol

1mo

Practice

1mo

I misread that.. and was like, yes, I practice humanity.

Something I applied

1mo

Rather something that a person practices or does. Humiliation, on the other hand, is something you endure.

1mo

You either have humility or you don't.

1mo

Practicing

1mo

Something that happens to me because nowadays people are so messed up in the head that they don't deserve humility, they deserve a lesson.

Personally, I do not know if this is cultural but as asians our parents have always compared us with siblings or cousins. Of course this is done only to spur us on, to do better however quite often, many of us end up internalising the inadequacies. Some of us will always remember that there is always someone better therefore, for us, humility has become second nature. Yet i believe a handful might react quite the opposite and boast whenever the opportunity arises. It is almost as though they believe they have to prove themselves to be accepted or worthy of love. For them, coupled with self-awareness, perhaps humility would something they have to actively practice. (edited)

Something you acquire

I think life is very good at showing how easily one can lose everything and how much one takes for granted. Which contributes to (for me) that I have learned how vulnerable everything is (also that I am more capable than I think of rebuilding something again), which makes me choose to practice more humility now than I did earlier in my life.

1mo

Circumstances may bring us to our knees; they cannot decide for us to become humble.

1mo

What?

1mo

This is what happens to me, I am by nature a modest, kind-hearted, and very trusting person.
