Brand New Blog

Well, the normal schedule has resumed, but I’m far from normal and I am still waiting to wake up pain free. Maybe tomorrow, the day after, or my body will just accept it as the new baseline and I’ll acclimatise. Anyway, it’s been a few days since the last blog and not much has changed, so there is a little to say, but I’ll say it anyway. Wednesday started early as I had somewhere to be and only a rough idea of how I would get there. To help with the pain and to wake me up, I had a quick bath, a bowl of cereal and got ready, then it was out the door. I quickly checked Google Maps and found out I’d have an hour of walking, even with public transport, but with my headphones on it wouldn’t be an issue. When I finally arrived at my destination, We Are Zenith’s head offices in Hebburn, I was welcomed in and shown to a small office. A few questions and a drug test later, I was out of the building and making my way to Newcastle to see my Dad. When I was in the toon, I couldn’t wait for my dad to grab some food, so I headed into a nearby Tesco for a meal deal. I gotta say, I don’t know how they do it, because I got an iced coffee, a sandwich and a packet of crisps and it was £3 cheaper than if I bought them separately. So they’re either marking up prices or they are making quite a loss, but anyway, I enjoyed my meal, which I ate on the steps of Grey’s Monument while I waited. I could have only been waiting about an hour when he arrived and we made our way to the cinema for the tickets, then to Poundland for sweets and drinks before heading back to the cinema to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day. I liked the film and if you feel there’s a but coming, well, there is, but not yet. After the film, we both headed to our separate homes. When I was back in my room, I’m assuming I played games, watched TV and ate junk. It’s all a blur. So was Thursday and Friday, right up until I lay in bed to write this blog. You can blame it on the pain meds, the lack of sleep or my bad attitude. They are all equally to blame. But... Spider-Man: Brand New Day was a good film, but it didn’t hold up to a few of my questions and I didn’t like how it skipped four years just to get to the point it needed to be at to tell the story. I didn’t like that it never showed how he managed to pay rent and afford all the stuff in his apartment. As much as I like Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, I can’t help but think that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock would have worked better. The same goes for Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner. I feel like there were better options, like using Curt Connors, for example. I also feel like it was trying to tell three different stories at the same time: Peter’s fresh start, Neogenic Nightmare from 1990s Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and a backdoor pilot to a new X-Men film. The fresh start was rushed, Peter’s evolution/body changing was mishandled, and they treated the whole thing like he was affected by a symbiote, with more aggression and black eyes, instead of showing his body becoming more spider-like. Also, I don’t like how Jean Grey was portrayed in the film. They made her out to be a villain and she never pays for her actions, which definitely include the murder of one man. They also wasted three villains for a montage: Tarantula, Boomerang and Tombstone. Scorpion and The Hand get more screen time, but very little to do. I also don’t understand why The Hand were used, as they’re more of a Daredevil enemy. I could go on, but I’ll stop after this point. I don’t buy that Peter Parker could tank what looks like a .50-cal round, but maybe I’ve watched too many Kentucky Ballistics videos. It’s easy to criticise, it’s harder to come up with an alternative. My version of Brand New Day wouldn’t have skipped four years. It would start shortly after No Way Home and it would be focused on Peter Parker trying to rebuild his life. Since it’s unclear if Peter Parker even exists on paper or in government documents, he should have a run-in with the law that gets him in front of Matt Murdock, who helps him become legal. To me, if Peter doesn’t have a camera, then he isn’t Peter, and my idea is that Matt Murdock hires him as a legal assistant’s photographer. I would also have Peter Parker doing some night schooling to get some qualifications and make some new friends, such as Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Flash Thompson or Felicia Hardy. All films need a villain, but not always, and even if they do, they don’t need to be villainous from the start. That’s why I would bring in Silvio Manfredi, the owner of the Italian coffee shop Filo d’Argento and a crime boss. But he would keep his hands clean. This film would mainly deal with the underlings, like Tombstone, Hammerhead or maybe Black Cat. I would treat Silvio Manfredi like Thanos — presence before payoff — and not make him a proper threat until the third film. I think he works because he’s not a villain that Peter can outpunch.
