Children and family names

Ok so I haven't had this problem my self, but I know of others who have gotten into relationships or a marriage with someone and had confusion or compromise over family names. In my culture it's custom for the "wife" to take the name of the "husband" she's marrying. However in these circumstances, the wife would not fully change her last name to the husband's, instead she would combine their last names with a hyphen (-) and would keep both last names. On top of that, baby brought about by the marriage would also have the babies with birth certificate official last names that resulted in the "wife's last name - husband's last name". I never understood this, and this just seems offensive to the husband's in my opinion. What are everyone's else's stand points, is this a common thing, and do you agree with this ideology or disagree??? (Honestly it's a call off for me to avoid getting into relationships with people that have this mindset) (edited)

The most confusing aspect of this is how come you don't end up with names with like 10 hyphens ...

Typically, at least in my culture. You dad gets to choose the last name for the children and the mom gets to pick the children's religion. Thats thw compromise. However, for the wifes last name she can do whatever she wants. (edited)
