It depends on the mental illness cause personality disorders are a whole new monster than disorders that can be treated with certain meds . They all can be a bish if you refused to get them treated Honestly it depends on the person cause some folks might be able to deal with a BPD over a schizophrenic cause psychotic themes can be horrifying at times (edited)

I think it depends on the person. I believe everybody needs and deserves to be loved and cared for. I also believe that mental health is important in improving throughout your life. I also know from government statistics that personality disorders are the most difficult to properly diagnose and treat and most people with them have a tendency to manipulate treatment methods according to their own disorder and lifestyle. With consideration of this, I still believe those people deserve to be loved regardless of their disorder. I've also seen that people with certain personality disorders often have an easier time than others in finding partners as they can easily shift their persona according to what attracts partners, than someone who has a more stable mental health and maintains a steadfast personality according to their upbringing and life experiences. Each individual should decide for themselves what they're willing to risk, what they're willing to deal with, and start they choose to experience in their relationships. For example you can take person A (stable mental health) and partner them with person B (personality disorders) and they might have a perfectly healthy relationship depending on their individual and combined needs, wants, personalities, and background. You could also partner person A with person C (stable mental health) but because of differences in background, needs, wants, experiences, that might turn into a high conflict relationship depending on compatability. Interestingly enough you can form any combination of pairing each of these individuals including with person D (personality disorders and depression) and achieve any number of varying results dependent on compatability. My best recommendation for determining compatability is that it evolves with your experiences, your own mental health, your intellect, desires, wants, needs, personality types, and how you react to triggers from previous trauma. Regarding all this the best approach to relationships is to have clear boundaries and values with what you're willing to accept and not accept in relationships and stand by those boundaries. Those 2 things will determine if a relationship regardless of who it's with will create the unique relationship experience you desire.

That's deep! Well done for acknowledging all of that - like any relationship it's about communication and openness. Only thing I disagree with is that everyone deserves to be loved...those who are aware of mh issues and do nothing to help themselves or those who even use it as an excuse for their behaviour without acknowledging they were wrong - those π© ppl do not deserve love when they allow their MH to impact on relationships which is a huge issue with personality disorders! Besides ADHD and Bipolar 2, I also have Borderline Personality Disorder which affects emotional regulation but now that I'm aware of it I don't use it as an excuse and my behaviour in the past is explained by that. Does not mean I like the way it makes me or that I wanted to be the way I was...if Ur not aware of issues it's hard to address them and u get more out of control around 30. Personally since finding out, I've probably had 3 partners and a couple other potential ones and I find that the ones with issues that refuse to take medication or treat it are the ones whose symptoms escalate, over the top, which in turn starts the process of destroying the relationship!
