never let someone manipulate you into thinking they’re making an effort when it’s just the bare minimum

THIS. I was too empathetic in a long distance relationship. Calling once a week was the "most he could do", never again. Ever.

Being factually correct does NOT mean you're right.

As you all know, many people these days think that being right is the only thing that matters during social interactions. This is nothing but pure ego, and a surefire method to push others away. For example, it's no secret that we're all going to die one day. That does NOT make it okay to go up to a 5-year-old kid in public and say that. Is it factually correct? Yes. But is it right? NO, absolutely not, and don't be surprised if that gets you reported to the police. The point is, even if something is factual, that doesn't automatically mean it's appropriate to say it in any given situation. If a certain fact is irrelevant, serves no purpose, isn't helpful, or only creates upset or drama, then it shouldn't be said, period. That is literally Social Skills 101. Additionally, to assume that human beings are logical at all times is fautly in and of itself. We are also very emotional creatures, and how we feel about others is what ultimately determines whether or not we want to form relationships with them. Such is being human. Having tact, a good choice of words, and respect for others is absolutely crucial to having fulfilling social interactions. Because if you come off as rude, condescending, arrogant, pretentious, creepy or downright disrespectful, even if you merely stated a fact, people will be very quick to dismiss and stop listenting to you. Myself included. In summary, it is important to be able to speak your mind and convey yourself. Nobody should be walking on eggshells in that regard. Simultaneously, you must also be mindful of how you convey your message. Think before you speak.
