Relationship to Friends

Question

I’m just curious about yall’s experiences if you’ve had any where you go from relationship to friends. I’m currently going through a period of change in how our relationship with each other is (she broke up but wanted to stay friends).

I’d like to know how experiences like this have worked and whether or not it is possible to rekindle things at some point in the future. Its been about a month since the break up and I’ve been doing my best to move on, I’m just curious anyway.

That's a tough one. I had a similar situation not too long ago. It was really tough at first. We had some arguments like we were still in a relationship. It's hard when you know the other person well and had history with.

Eventually we found our groove as friends and learned to have this new dynamic between us. It's not always smooth sailing though. Adjusting my expectations of the other person has been the hardest.

I was used to receiving lots of attention and support from him, but he stopped doing that after the breakup and being friends with me. I really gotta pull up my big girl pants and be a proper adult and stop expecting the things that were my privilege to have when I was with him.

Now we're doing well all things considered. We still talk daily though not as much, just like how friends are. And we're both slowly moving on from each other.

One thing I would suggest is to give yourself some time to deal with your pain. I'm talking about no contact. That's what we did. We stopped talking and ceased all contacts for a while before reaching out and said, okay let's try and be friends.

We aren't together anymore either and still talk sometimes. That's fine but is that "friends"?

If "friends" means that other person still wants the benefits of you being a helpful person that "fixes the lights" etc, I would say that's selfish and insensitive to your feelings.

Having said that, everyone has a different way of getting over a breakup, maybe this is just her way.

Ask yourself why you're friends with her. If the hope is to rekindle things, maybe don't. Take time to yourself to work through it.

If you're fine being just friends and never anything more, then cool. But still maybe take some distance for a bit.

Is not working, the friends after relationship thing. In this, is one person who still is in love and one that is too coward to end things for good. The best solution is not to be friends, so you can really move on.

am friends with all my exes. 
after the breakup, u both need time and space to put things in place, to find yourselves again and rebuild ur lives alone. 
but after that, I don't see why not maintaining the friendship, as long as it's healthy, and one really has affection and respect for the other... otherwise it will just be dependence, toxicity and will make it a lot hard to let go of what you had and move on with your life.
give some space,take care of yourself and finish one relationship before start another.

I had a relationship that started when I was 17 and we lasted about a year. I really bonded to him and he just... Didn't. But by that point we were basically set in the university we were going to. We both went to the same university following the break up. I was a DISASTER for a good year after we broke up.

When I just happened to run into him at one of the cafeteria we were able to actually have a proper talk about everything. It turned out that he was actually struggling with his sexuality and was gay. And while I hung out with him for the next 2 school years I still struggled with my feelings for him.

He was one of the few people I really fell for (my spouse being the other). And even though I am married now and I still have contact with him there are times where I have to admit to myself, my partner and his that I am struggling with my feelings for him at that time and I will distance myself for a while to help with that.

I don't know of this was helpful, I know my personality type bonds based on time spent together. It also requires a lot of introspection regarding yourself and your feelings and honesty regarding how to approach that.
