Why do you think that people struggle to stay committed in a relationship now of days?

It seems most marriages and relationship fail now of days. I'm just curious what you guys think are the main reasons.

I can do a whole TED talk on this. But, bulletpoint: - People are afraid of emotions and also of being single so they take the first person who will have them, not waiting for the right one -this generation is also used to throwing stuff away so people become as disposable as Dixie cups. So you have a lot of people making commitments to partners they barely know and aren't really good with who are also willing to just walk away rather than do the hard work of feeling things.

Main reason is people don't invest in each other anymore. They give priority to the wrong things. And thats how a marriage starts to crumble unfortunately (edited)

Commitment has never been a struggle for me, it's my default. That being said, I feel like cheating is a whole lot easier now than it has ever been and many people have no self control, which is one reason I haven't accepted a date in over 6 years

Also a lot of ppl for some reason don't know how to communicate what's bothering them etc, so they tend to keep it to their chest and end things. Everyday I see ppl ask "I don't like this thing my partner does should I break up or talk to them about it"? Ppl seem to have lost the common sense of communication (edited)

Probably setting unrealistic standards and expectations to their partners.

People don't spend enough time being uncommitted and figuring out who is worth a longer time commitment. Also its kind of like asking why are you still not working at the first job you had.

I went on about marriage in particular… oops. Holds true for commitments to some degree.

Lots of good points below. I would also add… to look back over generations, it was a cultural normative to be married. Plus, women couldn’t even have their own bank accounts until mid 20th century. If you didn’t stay in a marriage, you were looked down upon by society. Fast forward, it has become more socially acceptable to get divorced and still be ok. People now pursue marriage for love and companionship instead of business or functionality. (There’s an episode on Hidden Brain about this topic.) Because marriage for love is harder, it’s harder to keep. It’s easier to give up on and start over.
