The scientific community had a valid stance for opposing an unpopular opinion in the absence of empirical evidence in the name of scientific inquiry, just like American Physiological Society would challenge a physiologist attaching a functional significance to the appendix in the 19th century. However, their recognition of Payne's observation is also a hallmark of intellectual honesty. Countless examples of such prodigies exist in our community, seldom appreciated.

Science in History

Intertwined like a mass of twisted bodies sliding into a pit, these bizarre lava formations are a creepy natural oddity. Located in Hawaii over the West Kamokuna lava skylight, this eerie photo juxtaposes the proud researcher standing over what looks like the gates of hell.

The photo was shot by Laszlo Kestay, who is currently director of the USGS Astrogeology Science Center.

Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it as large and clear as this. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright #stars of the Pleiades can be seen with the unaided eye even from the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust #clouds surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident.

This 23-hour exposure, taken from Fagagna, Italy covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six of the sister stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding #sky and the clarity of the observer's eyesight.

Random thoughts for today

This is Hallucigenia, a creature that existed during the Cambrian Period approximately 541– 485 million years ago :] It grew up to about 5 centimeters long (just a little guy ^^)! When scientists first discovered the fossils for this animal, they couldn't tell which side was up, which was down, nor what end was the head.
The original theory for how it moved around was that it walked on its spikes like stilts with the tentacles on its back used to collect any food particles that passed by. As silly as that sounds, this was widely accepted and believed for decades until new fossils were discovered which redirected scientists' attention back to this crazy specimen. The finalized theory was that the spikes on its back were meant to defend from predators and it walked on its long(er) tendrils which had little claws on the ends of them :D Its mouth was located on the underside of its head with rows of teeth lining the inside and even down its throat to prevent anything from coming back up :] I should also note that jaws hadn't evolved yet, so mouths were pretty much just gaping holes lined with sharp teeth lol

Fun fact!

If you could stand on Mars, what might you see? You might look out over a vast orange landscape covered with rocks under a dusty orange sky, with a blue-tinted Sun over the horizon, and odd-shaped water clouds hovering high overhead. This was just the view captured last March by NASA's rolling explorer, Perseverance.

The orange coloring is caused by rusted iron in the Martian dirt, some of which is small enough to be swept up by winds into the atmosphere. The blue tint near the rising Sun is caused by blue light being preferentially scattered out from the Sun by the floating dust. The light-colored clouds on the right are likely composed of water-ice and appear high in the Martian atmosphere. The shapes of some of these clouds are unusual for Earth and remain a topic of research.

To the Moon and Back

This galaxy is unusual for how many stars it seems that you can see. Stars are so abundantly evident in this deep exposure of the spiral galaxy NGC 300 because so many of these stars are bright blue and grouped into resolvable bright star clusters. Additionally, NGC 300 is so clear because it is one of the closest spiral galaxies to Earth, as light takes only about 6 million years to get here.

Of course, galaxies are composed of many more faint stars than bright, and even more of a galaxy's mass is attributed to unseen dark matter. NGC 300 spans nearly the same amount of sky as the full moon and is visible with a small telescope toward the southern constellation of the Sculptor. This image was captured in October from Rio Hurtado, Chile and is a composite of over 20 hours of exposure.

How was the Crescent Nebula created? Looking like an emerging space cocoon, the Crescent Nebula, visible in the center of this image, was created by the brightest star in its center. A leading progenitor hypothesis has the Crescent Nebula beginning to form about 250,000 years ago.

At that time, the massive central star had evolved to become a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136), shedding its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of our Sun's mass every 10,000 years. This wind impacted surrounding gas left over from a previous phase, compacting it into a series of complex shells, and lighting it up.

The Crescent Nebula, also known as NGC 6888, lies about 4,700 light-years away in the constellation of Cygnus. Star WR 136 will probably undergo a supernova explosion sometime in the next million years.

Braided and serpentine filaments of glowing gas suggest this nebula's popular name, The Medusa Nebula. Also known as Abell 21, this Medusa is an old planetary nebula some 1,500 light-years away in the constellation #gemini. Like its #mythology namesake, the nebula is associated with a dramatic transformation. 

The planetary nebula phase represents a final stage in the evolution of low mass stars like the sun as they transform themselves from red giants to hot white dwarf stars and in the process shrug off their outer layers. Ultraviolet radiation from the hot star powers the nebular glow. The Medusa's transforming star is the faint one near the center of the overall bright crescent shape. In this deep telescopic view, fainter filaments clearly extend below and to the left. The #medusa Nebula is estimated to be over 4 light-years across.

The Medusa Nebula ✨️

What do you get 🤔

Like an illustration in a galactic Just So Story, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula winds through the emission region and young star cluster complex IC 1396, in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus. Also known as vdB 142, this cosmic elephant's trunk is over 20 light-years long.

The detailed telescopic view features the bright swept-back ridges and pockets of cool interstellar dust and gas that abound in the region. But the dark, tendril-shaped clouds contain the raw material for star formation and hide protostars within. Nearly 3,000 light-years distant, the relatively faint IC 1396 complex covers a large region on the sky, spanning over 5 degrees. This rendition spans a 1 degree wide field of view though, about the angular size of 2 full moons.
