Very cool topic! I hope more people will engage. Personally, I think that at least primitive life should be abundant in the universe. Reason: one of the most plausible theoried states that life on Earth started in serpentinite hydrothermal vents. Conditions needed for such vents are thought to be pretty common across universe (basically, large amount of water, geothermal activity, and some reasonably common minerals). That said, there are at least two big gaps that separate procariotic life from begetting a civilization. One being the evolution of eucariotes and second is the evolution of intelligence. It's very hard to say how likely/unlikely these events are. I'm inclined to think that they are extremely unlikely and so we probably won't run into an advanced intelligent species anytime soon (edited)
