"Boundaries aren't cages, they're filters"
The phrase i discovered recently turns out to be a bit more popular of a modern idiom that I thought. So it's used to reframe the concept of personal limits from a restrictive, negative action to a positive, protective one. It signifies that boundaries are not designed to trap or isolate you (cages), but to allow in the right people and experiences while keeping out the wrong ones (filters). Here is a breakdown of what this means in practice from what i could gather: Filters vs. Cages: Unlike a cage, which shuts everything out and keeps you confined, a filter is permeable. It permits healthy connection and love to flow in, but blocks harmful energy, toxicity, or disrespect. Protection, Not Punishment: Boundaries are not intended to hurt others, but to protect your own peace, time, and emotional energy. A Tool for Clarity: By setting boundaries, you discover who respects your needs and who does not. Those who respect them will stay; those who push against them reveal themselves, allowing you to filter them out. An Act of Self-Love: Rather than being selfish, setting boundaries is a form of self-respect that allows you to engage with the world on your own terms. In essence, boundaries allow you to be open-hearted without being vulnerable to exploitation. Share your thoughts, opinions and experiences with this in the replies below. Remember to be civil and maintain a sense of poise and rationality.

There's this lady at work, who's basically everyone's mom. The only problem I have with her is that she keeps trying to talk me into learning how to be okay with hugs and telling people I care about that I love them. I'm perfectly fine with her as a mother figure, since I'm not fond of my real parents (and neither is she: bonus), I just wish she'd accept that I'm not comfortable doing these things.
