There are many wonderful life coaches, counselors, business coaches, body workers, yoga instructors, fitness coaches and therapists out there..

AND There are many wellness practitioners who skew on the culty side of things. One way to tell the difference is whether or not there is room for YOUR experiences and beliefs in their approach. If someone is trying to squeeze you into a box of "us vs them," "my way or no way," or "you're either in or you're out," then you may be in a potentially harmful environment. Buyer beware .. 🖤💫..

"Crazy" is a moral judgment, not a biological reality.

There's no such thing as a "crazy" person. Having a mental illness does not make someone crazy. Having unexplained symptoms doesn't make someone crazy. All symptoms make sense in context - even if we don't know what it is. Having intrusive thoughts - even the really distressing ones - doesn't... read more

In any relationship, the presence of relational repair is much more important than the total absence of conflict..

Conflict (excluding abuse) isn't usually what damages relationships - the lack of skillful repair is. When handled with care, a relationship rupture can be strengthened and restored to an even greater level when this specific skill is honed.

[Disclaimer] This post is not a comment on the nature of addiction. It does not deny the reality of genetics as a component of addiction. It is not intended to minimize, invalidate, negate, or in any way cause harm for people who want to use the phrase "addictive personality"

This post is a question, not a proclamation. Do what makes sense for you. I used to claim I had an addictive personality. And it wasn't altogether untrue - I've been addicted to a variety of things, people, places, chemicals and behaviours. Some more severe than others. I've seen as a recovering... read more

If it was easy to, "just get over it" or "just let it go," we all would "just" do that..

It is NOT easy because our bodies are not designed to "just let things go." Our experiences become part of our physiology - even if we can't remember them. The good news? You can't change anything about the past, but you CAN change how your brain experiences the past in the present. And your... read more

Have you ever hated the sound of your voice? There's a term for it - it's called VOICE CONFRONTATION.

There are physiological reasons why we hear ourselves differently when we speak than when we hear ourselves recorded. In relationships certain terms like narcissism, trauma and gaslighting are both tragically UNDERUSED and grossly OVERUSED - all at the same time.

One of the questions often asked is, "What is the difference between lying and gaslighting?" The short answer is this: Lying is when someone tells you a false story about THEIR reality.. Gaslighting is when someone tells you a false story about YOUR reality.. Lying says, "I didn't do... read more

It is normal for the body to feel exhausted once it starts to feel safe...

If the body had been in a state of hyper vigilance for days, weeks, months, years, decades. That means the body has been running on super high levels of cortisol and adrenaline, which it's not meant to do for that amount of time. It takes the body time to recover, recuperate and get used to this... read more

Trauma is trauma because the thing that happened was something we did NOT get to choose.

If we COULD have chosen, we would have chosen NOT to be traumatized. Anywhere our choices are taken away, the likelihood of trauma is high. The reverse is also true. Coping skills can be really useful when a nervous system constantly has the panic button switched ON during safe situations with safe people.

When "coping skills" don't work, therapists/healers/coaches sometimes blame the person for not trying hard enough, not "doing the work", or not being "spiritual" enough. Sometimes the message is, "if the work isn't working, it must be that you're not working the work." NOT ALWAYS. Sometimes... read more

Most of us have had thoughts like these:

"Why did I say that?" "Why did I do that?" "Why did I think that?" "I'm so stressed" "I'm so overwhelmed" When we use the word "I" to talk to ourselves, we tend to "blend" (IFS term) with our stressors. This can make things worse.
