Unnecessary suffering...
Most of our emotional pain is self-inflicted, it's unnecessary suffering. We see this when people have outsized reactions to small events, revealing a deep struggle within. This is the core of most psychological treatment. This needless suffering takes many forms: * Excessive and prolonged anxiety. * Self-hatred and depression over minor or imaginary mistakes. * Extended sadness for losses that aren't real. * Intense anger from unrealistic expectations. * Shame based on other people's meaningless opinions. From the outside, we can see these situations logically and objectively, and we can react to them appropriately. But from the inside, when we're in the thick of it, we filter events through our past experiences, fears, and deeply held beliefs. This is where our suffering comes from -not the event itself. For example, if a partner is late, a healthy reaction is to feel a little annoyed. But if you have a deep-seated fear of abandonment, this small event can trigger terror and grief. Similarly, a minor mistake becomes a catastrophe if you have a guilt complex or perfectionism. This unnecessary suffering costs us our health, relationships, and well-being. It's rooted in our distorted views of ourselves and the world-narratives we've internalized and believe to be true. The key to freedom is learning to step back, detach from these stories, and recognize that our own perspective is the source of our pain. Owning your triggers means recognizing that your emotional reaction isn't just about what happened, but about the story you're telling yourself about what happened.

Stoicism teaches us to accept our emotions without being controlled by them. It is natural to fear but needlessly giving in to fear solves no problems and only makes things worse. Instead accept that you feel an emotion and then step inward and assess why and how to resolve the situation in a rational calm manner.
