"Who do you text when everything is falling apart?"

Nobody. I've scrolled through my contacts at 2 a.m. more times than I can count. Hundreds of names. People I laugh with, people I've known for years, people who would probably pick up. And still, my thumb hovers over the screen and then I lock the phone and put it face down on the mattress. It's not that I don't have people. It's that I don't have the words. Or maybe I have the words, but somewhere between my chest and my fingertips they get deleted. I think it started early. My parents weren't bad people. They fed me, clothed me, showed up to things. But emotions were this foreign language nobody spoke in our house. Sadness was met with "you're fine." Crying was met with "stop that." A bad day was met with silence, or worse, a lecture about what I should have done differently. So I learned. I learned that feelings were inconvenient. That expressing them made people uncomfortable, or annoyed, or distant. I learned to swallow them before they could be dismissed. I got really, really good at being fine. The problem with getting good at that is you get good at it everywhere. Now someone tells me they love me and my first instinct is suspicion. Why? What do you want? You don't even know me. I've had friends say it, partners say it, and every time there's this split second where I just... don't believe them. Not because they're lying. Because I genuinely don't understand what they're seeing. It's like being handed a gift I don't know how to hold. I text nobody. Not because I'm brave. Not because I'm strong. Because reaching out feels like standing on a ledge. Because I don't know how to say "I'm not okay" without immediately wanting to take it back. Because every time I've tried, it's come out wrong, or too much, or not enough, and I've watched the other person's face do that thing where they don't know what to do with me. So I sit with it. Alone. And then in the morning I get up and go to work and answer "how are you?" with "good, you?" and nobody knows. I'm writing this because I know I'm not the only one. There are so many of us who were raised to be fluent in silence. Who love people but can't let people love us back. Who have a whole network of support and still feel like there's no one to call.

it's so sad to read; but you're farther than most in understanding where your trauma and heartbreak comes from. I hope you realize one day that if they are your friends, do care, and you mean something to them; they will answer you. You will be comforted and helped. Just be honest on what you need. Some will try to solve the issues, some will just listen and give advice; others will pass no judgement and be an ear only. You know your friends and can judge who will do what you need. Or you have a voice here and people that will usually try to be there for you. We are your community. In all our issues and glory.

The simple act of reaching out seems like placing a burden on others... I'd guess you're on the receiving end, routinely listening to people talk about their problems and being supportive. 🤔

At this point in my life I don't have a person to text my woes to but I've found a solution to most of that. I run. I run until whatever it was doesn't seem so bad. On top of that it's also a great way to stay in shape! It's been a great mindset shift overall.

I can relate. All I do is keep my emotional dependency on no one. I do share emotions, I do have emotional maturity, but relying on anyone for emotional support is not my thing anymore. The only person I used to talk is my mom, but now she's getting old too and now the situation is such that I am many's emotional support yet I have to keep my emotions to myself, just to maintain peace ! Slowly friends got silent too ! Sometimes I get a match with someone wonder full and soon I start opening up, they just get scared or label me as I am broken. So that's how it is now. However I have HOPE, which NO ONE can take away from me, A DREAM of my own so something to keeps things moving. Is there not a guy wrenching feeling that I want to be someone and feel love, there is. Life is life it will be what will be. But I trust myself and confidence in myself to make it happen ! (edited)

this is beautifully written and I know the shape of what you're saying because one of the loves of my life came from this same place. when we parted, it was because of this exact thing. please. start telling people about your emotions. if you don't, you'll always be fluent in silence, and someday you'll meet someone who's worth your every effort. you'll want to say all the things, but you won't know how--and even in the best case he'll stay, and you'll be two islands. alone. and then in the morning you'll both get up and go to work and answer "how are you" with "good, you'?" and neither of you knows. connection is worth the effort. it will reward you if you let it.
