When people from other countries claim that the United States has a short or limited history, what they often mean is that the European chapter of American history is relatively new. That perspective reflects a very Eurocentric lens that begins its timeline at the moment of colonization and erases everything that came before it. The truth is that North America has a human story stretching back tens of thousands of years, rich with complexity, culture, and achievement. When someone says that America has no history, what they are really revealing is how little they know about the civilizations that existed long before a single European ship ever crossed the Atlantic. Our history is not short; it is simply older than many choose to recognize. Long before colonial expansion, the continent was home to thriving societies that rivaled the sophistication of Europe and Asia in their own time. In the American Southwest, massive stone dwellings and cliff cities still stand as monuments to the Ancestral Puebloans, the Hohokam, and the Mogollon peoples. These architectural marvels are centuries older than any colonial settlement and represent advanced craftsmanship, trade, and social organization. The Mississippi Valley was once home to vast mound-building cultures that constructed ceremonial complexes larger than many European cathedrals of the same era. Each of these societies developed unique art, religion, and agricultural systems that shaped the land and left behind a story written in earth and stone. Archaeology continues to reveal how deep that story goes. At White Sands National Park in New Mexico, researchers uncovered fossilized human footprints preserved alongside those of Pleistocene giant sloths and mammoths. These prints are estimated to be at least twenty-three thousand years old, placing humans in North America while glaciers still dominated much of the northern hemisphere. That discovery alone rewrites what we thought we knew about early migration and human settlement. It also reminds us that the land we now call the United States has been inhabited for far longer than the span of European memory. Every canyon, riverbed, and desert plain holds echoes of people who lived, built, and thrived in harmony with this continent. So when someone dismisses America as a land without history, I remind them that history is not measured in castles or cathedrals. It is measured in continuity, in the endurance of cultures that have survived against impossible odds, and in the stories that remain carved into rock faces and passed down through generations. The United States is not a blank slate that began in 1776. It is an ancient landscape layered with civilizations, innovations, and belief systems that stretch back to the dawn of humanity. To say that America lacks history is to overlook the evidence written in its soil and to forget that history is far older and far broader than any one continent’s timeline.

Many Europeans often wonder why Americans seem less inclined to travel abroad, yet what they fail to recognize is the staggering size of the United States itself. You can fit nearly all of Europe within the lower forty-eight states, and that’s without even including Alaska. Within this vast expanse... read more
