1moWhat I Imagine Chosen Feels Like
I think it begins in the smallest places, in the quiet certainty that somewhere in another person's day there is a space shaped specifically for you. A message sent without needing a reason, a thought saved because they know you would laugh at it, your name becoming something their mind reaches for when the world hands them something beautiful. Nothing dramatic announces the change. You simply begin appearing in the margins of someone else's life until one day you realize you are no longer standing in the margins. I imagine there is a particular warmth in being expected. A door opening before you knock because the footsteps were recognized, a place beside someone kept empty without anyone having to ask, the ordinary machinery of two lives slowly learning how to accommodate each other. Your favorite thing appears in the cupboard because someone noticed it was running low. Their coat ends up hanging beside yours. Two separate collections of small necessities begin forgetting which home they originally belonged to. There would be mornings that contain almost nothing worth remembering, and perhaps those would become the ones I treasured most. Sleep-heavy eyes, tangled blankets, the soft negotiation over who has to move first, a body nearby radiating the simple proof that someone stayed through the night. No declarations would be necessary there. An absent-minded hand finding you beneath the blankets would say everything language keeps trying to make complicated. I imagine learning another person by accumulation. Which silence means peace and which means something is wrong, how they take their coffee, what makes them laugh when they are trying not to, which stories they tell differently depending on how tired they are. Eventually I would know the geography of them without thinking, the same way hands learn the location of familiar things in darkness, and they would know me with that same unconscious precision. There would be difficult days, of course. Chosen could never mean untouched by weather. But I imagine the storms would feel different when neither person is deciding whether to leave during them, when disagreement is something carried to the table rather than something packed into a suitcase. Two people could be angry and still make dinner. One could need distance and still leave the porch light burning. Love might sometimes look less like holding on and more like knowing the other person will come back. I think being chosen would make touch different. Not because every touch would burn with desire, but because so many of them would not need to. A hand resting against my back while passing behind me, knees touching beneath a table, fingers finding mine during a movie neither of us is really watching. The body would stop treating affection like something scarce enough to memorize. It could simply receive it, trusting there would be more. I imagine becoming someone's first witness. The person who hears the ridiculous idea before it has been cleaned up for anyone else, who gets the photograph of something completely ordinary because they wanted me standing there with them somehow. I would be told about the good news while it was still trembling, the bad news before it had learned how to pretend it was fine. There would be something sacred in being trusted with the unfinished version of a person and giving them mine in return. Maybe that is the part I imagine most clearly: not having to audition anymore. No careful arrangement of the best pieces, no wondering which imperfection will finally make the scale tip, no measuring every word to make certain wanting does not show too brightly through it. I could simply exist beside someone who had already looked at the whole inconvenient collection and decided there was nowhere else they would rather put their hands. For once, being fully seen would not be the moment before departure. Years might collect around us that way. Not as some perfect procession of anniversaries and photographs, but in worn places on furniture, private jokes becoming incomprehensible with age, arguments we can no longer remember beginning, recipes changed until neither knows whose version they became. Perhaps one morning I would look across a room and see someone who had watched my face grow older without ever confusing age with disappearance, and understand that I had been allowed to remain. I can imagine all of this with embarrassing clarity. I can tell you where the sunlight falls across the bed. I can feel the weight of a sleeping head against my chest, the warmth left behind when someone gets up first, the interruption of a kiss while I am trying to finish a sentence. I know how the kitchen sounds with another person moving through it, how two toothbrushes look leaning toward one another in a cup, how it must feel to hear footsteps coming down a hallway and know they are coming toward me. I have furnished entire rooms with it. There are curtains in windows that do not exist, a second cup cooling beside mine, a hand resting comfortably in the place where my body has always imagined one. There are conversations I can nearly remember, mornings I have somehow begun to miss, a thousand ordinary moments polished smooth from being held so often in my mind. Sometimes the life is detailed enough that I can stand inside it for a while without noticing there is no floor. Then something small brings me back. The other side of the bed has not been disturbed. There is only one cup on the table. No coat beside mine. No footsteps in the hallway have learned my name. The room is exactly as I left it. And every beautiful thing I have just described is something I know how to miss without ever having had it.
