What lies beneath

She was kneeling in the courtyard of the building, holding a small metal spade in her hands. With swift movements, she dug into the ground, occasionally glancing back to check if anyone was watching from the windows of the building. The woman appeared to be in her mid-40s, wearing dark jeans, a black top, and a headscarf that stood out with its colorful dark green, not quite matching the rest of her outfit. Suddenly, she noticed someone at a window—a woman. Ignoring the interruption, she continued her work, but the woman from the window opened it and spoke, as if she were addressing a gardener, "Hey, who told you to dig there?" The woman who was digging was a bit surprised but tried to continue as if she hadn't heard the question. The woman at the window repeated herself, this time louder. Turning towards her, the digger responded, "Why not?" At that moment, the woman at the window realized that the digger wasn't a gardening service person but someone who lived in the same building. She moved away from the window. The hole was approximately 20cm deep, and the spade she had been using proved to be very helpful. She had purchased it a few days earlier on her way back from work, at a small shop that sold gardening tools. The shopkeeper had smiled, wondering why someone would buy gardening tools in a city mostly covered in concrete. However, she was content with her purchase, not dwelling on the shop or its staff, as she had something specific on her mind. A week ago, she had been at the local village cemetery for a sad occasion—her mother had passed away. She had bid her final farewell as the coffin was lowered into the ground. During that time, she had worn her mother's scarf, which adorned her dark black hair with just a few gray strands, indicating that she appeared younger than her actual age of over 40. This time, there was no body to bury; instead, there were some food scraps. She planned to bury potato and cucumber peels in the pit. These scraps would be consumed by the worms. Her intention was to plant flowers in that spot, where the remnants of the old life would give rise to new life. What goes beneath the surface would be reborn. Carefully, she covered the pit with soil, making it inconspicuous, so no one would suspect that something was buried there. Rising to her feet, she brushed off the dirt clinging to her dark jeans and returned to her apartment. She felt a sense of relief.
