What usually gets you to put the first words on a blank page?

The first words come from that spark of intuition in the void that commands "PRODUCE AN IDEA THAT GETS THEM THINKING" Therefore, I will say the most beligerant, incendiary thing I can come up with for shock value humor, but the real challenge is supporting and defending it when you really don't feel that way or have any stake in the opinion. (Everyone adamantly opposed generally has compromised and betrayed their emotions on the matter)

Nothing because i feel empty (edited)

The first words are easy because they tend to be the ones you write with the most energy. You think of them as a sentence that will be in the final draft, even if that's not the case later. So it can be said that they are a sudden inspiration; then it remains to continue 🙃

Anything, whatever comes to mind, just write it down. It doesn't have to perfect or coherent, you can edit it later.

Music.

1mo

Reaching the point in the worldbuilding process where ideas and events start lining up

1mo

I just write the feeling, the story, or whatever I want to express to fill the void with creativity or emotions.

1mo

A blank page is a closed door. I write to see what's inside.

1mo

A great plan in my head))

1mo

I start imagining. An animal a color a shape of stone or maybe a tiny bone 🦴 but once I started saying enough to put the things in place so not to be mistook. And build I build an entire world of imagination to be unfurled then I start writing about how I want it to be.because the only one to decide that will be me. (edited)

As a writer, what drives me is to have a detailed idea

1mo

Inspiration, fleeting thought, muse.. :)

A manic episode. I think I can write an 800-page novel in 8 hours haha Who needs sleep?

1mo

Taking any responsibility off yourself. Do what you do and let whatever happens happen. It's a very strange thesis, but often it really helps me switch off my mind and just dive into the text.

1mo

Finally having the desire to let all my thoughts characters settings story beats out and see where they go on their own

1mo

My emotions and feelings, and directly when I'm having an emotional crisis, or I feel deeply sad or something very strong has just happened to me, it's right there where the words come out on their own, my brain doesn't need to do anything but coordinate the movements of my fingers typing on the keyboard of my laptop. It's no coincidence that I'm already writing my second novel.

1mo

The desire to ink the paper.

1mo

The way I can create a world for others to see what I envision even if it isn't perfect

1mo

Good question. I never know how to start.

I am almost always driven by a dissonance: a piece of news, a phrase, a number that seem to say one thing but, if you look closer, tell another story. I start writing when I feel that beneath the surface there is something we haven't yet understood. Then I follow the thread until that small crack becomes a story. And almost always I end up somewhere that, at the first line, I hadn't anticipated.

1mo

The fact that they just need to be written. No one will do it for me.

1mo

It depends on which notebook the page is in....

1mo

Any outdoor feeling or sensation can mean it can be poems about so-called politics regarding how the Czech economy or the state bank behaves, or there can also be a poem about a woman or a car.

1mo

I see it from different points of view. Sometimes writing is catharsis: pure emotion. Other times I want to create something deliberately and then I turn to creative tools. There are also memories and experiences, whether my own or others', that end up becoming material for writing. It's a topic that could be very extensive, so I'll stop here.

IM HAPPY

1mo

One phrase, there are many scenes that cross my life and help me to refine ideas. But life itself is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

1mo

Something pops in my head, something I could not forget.

1mo

The first word I always use in my blank page is my emotions, it will create a poem for me....

Procrastination

Doing literally anything else other than thinking about or trying to write.

1mo

An irresistible idea.

1mo

Pain or a profound statement

1mo

Inspiration. The unattainable experiences in any way other than imagination. I am more accustomed to writing fantasies than concrete things, allegories rather than what we live, projected into other universes ☺️

1mo

A feeling, an emotion, an experience.

1mo

The idea. Where that comes from is anybody’s guess! Initially: first words in the page set the initial scene, present world and dilemma. From in paragraph, the idea of the idea is there.

1mo

A quiet room, table lamp and sitting at the table, sunrise and swirling the tea in hand. 🦭

1mo

A thought that circles in my head for so long until I finally have to write it down. ✍️🖤

Summary

Most of the community said the first words arrive on a wave of feeling: emotions, sadness, fear or pure catharsis that demand to be put into order on the page. Nearly as many pointed to a sudden idea, a stubborn thought circling in their head, or a flash of inspiration that refuses to be forgotten, while a large group credited imagination, dreams and the pull of building whole worlds and characters. Smaller clusters named lived experience, memories and hard times, the simple urge to express and communicate, or the right mood and setting such as music, quiet, boredom or a cup of tea. A handful advised just writing anything at all and editing later, and a few offered playful answers like the ink in the pen, procrastination or never knowing how to begin.
