Intro

Unspeakable terrors creeping upon the floor of unkept crypts inching painfully closer to the surface's door to spread their malediction through the cobwebs hanging from our thoughts shapeless - as if a liquid with no vessel in which to be held slowly and quietly dripping into the darkened crevices in our brains' blighted valleys; paranoia soon settles with a silence more silent than a silence should ever be there are those who have noticed something feeling off though - the reason was nigh impossible to place akin to when one could swear they'd forgotten something like locking the portal's entrance to their dwellings and for weeks - it went no further than that unease - but as subtle as it was - that sense is within all minds and a meeting was held in their small Appalachian town; a mix of those believing themselves competent and on the cusp of moving forward in their station and those who are merely concerned for the town itself - their cacophony was a symptom of their disease "What we have gathered thus far is that people among us have been experiencing eerie feelings that are outside of reason; without clear cause or any logical bearing; hard to not wonder why." calmly spoke the Mayor - his tone was soft and respected "Perhaps a mass hysteria - like that of the dancing nuns?" called out the town's sole psychiatrist - his words met disbelief "What if it's devils or demons - punishment for our sin?" rang out a good-hearted and God fearing man "Maybe there's some sort of contamination in the water supply?" suggested a woman towards the middle of the crowd many were giving their idea as to what this phenomenon could be over a hundred voices - beginnings and ends overlapping until a small group dressed in fine - ebon attire stood all at once "We will check every possibility mentioned and more from psychosis to the water - demons and devil's but we must know; where did this start - if there is a guess that anyone may have to posit - we are listening" and the psychiatrist answered yet again "I'd check the mountains - near the logger's cabins if not there - then perhaps the river running parallel to the railroad heading toward the east; most of my patients in this matter have been workers in one of those two locations; there's little elsewhere." "Then check there we shall - and when we return it will hopefully be with a touch more knowledge than is had now" their group of four left the hall of murmurs and as they were about to cross the brick road an elderly - and frail man grabbed at the groups de facto leader and let out strained words "If you see it - it will take your vision it will break your mind into fragments and no one but me will believe you no one but me will see you" and as Blackwood looked upon his face just before pulling himself free from the old man's grasp he noticed - the man had no eyes in which to see with scars surrounding the holes - as if he had ripped them out he thought that the man was merely senile - dementia ridden - and perhaps under the same sickness that was so pervasive in this region as of late. "Come" he said, "there is much work for us to see to completion" looking to the others before moving to his carriage - he saw a Evenings Mirror newspaper in the street that read "1890, October 27th: unexplained happenings in and around central Pennsylvania. Investigation pending"
